Cajun won his race and was well enough to leave the hospital after being injured by a piece of wood that entered his leg during the tornado that destroyed the barn he was in. The wood entered the joint of his right rear leg tearing the tendon sheath. It wasn’t until June 2, when Cajun arrived at Tufts and was immediately operated on to remove the wood. He has undergone subsequent surgeries. As the wound healed and pieces of wood came closer to the surface surgeries were performed with the aid of ultrasound to ensure all the wood was removed.

We’ve all had splinters and know what it feels like, but in the case of a horse an injury of this type can be fatal if all the wood isn’t removed. With the help of ultrasound, these fragments could be seen and then removed.

Cajun is now at the Ross Haven Farm working on getting back in shape and enjoying the breeze blowing on his face.

THANK YOU for any donation you can make to help the Kass family bring Cajun home safe!

We are working to bring the Kass family’s beloved paint, Cajun, home to their Brimfield farm after he was seriously injured by the tornado that struck the area on June 1st. The storm destroyed the Kass family home, their barn, and killed one of Cajun’s pasture mates, a beautiful gelding named Dakota

After a dozen volunteers spent hours clearing the path for a horse trailer, Cajun was brought by the Animal Rescue League of Boston to the renowned Cummings School of Veterinary at Tuft’s University for treatment. Cajun has already undergone several lengthy surgeries, and further treatment is still needed. Once Cajun gets a clean bill of health from Tufts, he will have to undergo extensive equine rehabilitation before he is able to return home to his familiar green fields, loving family, and surviving pasture mates, Dragon and Mouse.

100% of your contribution will be put towards the costs incurred in treating Cajun and returning him back to proper health – and home. It will be a heartwarming day when the Kass family welcomes Cajun back, and the joy will undoubtedly be felt by all of this close knit family: both the human and the equine members.

Have you ever thought who the hound in this business is? You might also be wondering why there’s no picture to go with the “About Us” section. Well, the hound’s name was Susie, and she was very camera shy. Susie had a rough beginning when I adopted her and here is her story.

Seven years ago, I came across this 2-year-old female beagle available for adoption through BREW (Beagle Rescue, Education and Welfare) which then became known as Beagles of New England States (BONES) (www.bonesbeagles.org). I immediately applied for Susie and received word that I could visit her at her foster home. I drove to western Massachusetts to meet the little girl. Susie was very shy and timid. The only way I could say “hello” was to sit on the floor with my back to her and my hands on the floor behind me. Susie would then come and sniff my hands. After a brief visit, I drove home knowing that as shy as she was, she was going to be mine. I confirmed with BONES that Susie was the beagle for me. Once her vet care and spaying were all complete, I got word that she was ready to be adopted.

On a nice mid-September day, I once again drove to western Massachusetts to get my new pal. After spending a short time with her, I put her in the car in her new bed and off we went to her new home. After a 2 hour ride, we pulled into the driveway. As I went to get her out of the car and not even having the door wide open, Susie lunged at the door of the car pushing it wide open and knocking me down. As I fell to the ground, and Susie starting to run off, I was lucky enough to catch the leash with my foot only to have it slip out as I went to get up. Susie was off and running. My normal reaction was to call her name and run after her. This was the wrong thing to do with a shy, timid and very frightened pup. I’m now running through the backyards of my neighbors what somewhat surprised looks on their faces asking “have you seen a small beagle with a collar and leash goes through here?”

It was a late Sunday afternoon and after a few passes through backyards, I went in and called the non-emergency police number as well as Tufts Emergency Vets (www.tufts.edu/vet) to inform them that if someone comes in with a female beagle, it may be Susie. I went back out and made a few more passes before dark to see if I could find her. No luck. After tossing and turning during the night, I went out early Monday morning calling her name and looking all over the yard. Later that day, one of the volunteers for BONES came down with her two beagles and we went yard-to-yard looking for clues. One of her dogs found a clue so we knew that Susie was still in the area.

The Animal Rescue League came out and set up a Have-a-Heart trap in the hopes that Susie would be hungry enough to want the food set inside. No luck. I even set a crate up outside and rigged the door with a couple of ropes thinking that might be less frightening and she may go in and I could close the door. She would go as far as the door and then walk away. I then started to leave a trail of food from the yard up onto the deck and into the porch. Well, Susie’s nose went into action and she was following the trail of treats into the porch. Knowing that Susie was coming onto the porch, one night I hid under a gas grill cover thinking that if she went into the porch I could close the slider. Well, it got a little warm under the cover and needless to say, Susie didn’t arrive.

During this time Susie was on the loose, the Animal Rescue League kept in touch to see how things were going. When I told them that I had seen her and even a couple of the neighbors who joined in the rescue mission saw her, they said they would come out to see if they could locate her and tranquilize her. They came out on a rainy Friday night, went through the yard and spotted the little pup hiding in the bushes. Seeing how small she was, they did not want to risk shooting her with a tranquilizer gun as they were afraid they would harm her. I had them move the trap into the porch and set it up. They set it up in such a way that the back could be taken off and the slider up against the front with the top of it blocked off. After a couple of days, Susie was home safe and sound. She finally, got used to being touched and petted by people and enjoyed training her humans, going for walks and riding in the car and enjoying a good life. Unfortunately, I lost Susie a week before Christmas 2010 to high blood pressure and kidney disease at the age of 9. She is truly missed, but her spirit lives on in the business.
